Malta, Mosta
Guide to Malta, Gozo, Comino.
|
| The spectacular domed church of Mosta can be seen from all over the island; a true landmark - and extremely useful for navigating. (Malta's road signs are often less than helpful, telling you where you should turn off only after you have passed the junction). This dome is absolutely huge (37metres in diameter); the fourth largest unsupported in Europe - after the Pantheon, St Peter's in Rome and the Basilica Xewkija, in neighbouring Gozo.
Mosta itself is a hectic, commercial town with plenty of cosmopolitan coach trippers and other visitors. Many of these can be seen taking their life in their hands trying to cross the busy roads to get far enough away from the dome to be able to take a photograph of it. There are plenty of places to take a break from the bustle and sit with a drink and a bite to eat around the church square. The internet cafe here does a mean cake and cappuccino with copies of the Maltese newspapers available.
