Malta, Dingli - Church
Malta, Gozo, Comino. |
| The tiny Maltese village of Dingli is not remarkable in itself - it's just another very small, ordinary, Maltese village but - as seems to be the norm in Malta - it has a huge, extraordinarily beautiful church. Apparently, Malta has a church for every day of the year and they all seem to be spectacular. These parish churches are scattered all over Malta's interior and dominate the village squares. Their domes and steeples can be seen from miles away. The churches are built from huge limestone blocks quarried on Malta. This local stone is soft and easy to work. It has a beautiful warm, ochre hue and can be seen all over Malta - many buildings are adorned with intricate carvings. When first quarried the stone is paler, but mellows and becomes more golden with age. If you visit Dingli, it is well worth carrying on down to the coast at Dingli Cliffs. They offer spectacular views and a good place for a walk with the wind in your hair.
