Malta, Mdina, Courtyard of the Xara Palace Hotel and the Convent of St Benedict
Malta, Gozo, Comino. |
| Mdina is known as Malta's "Silent City". It is a beautifully preserved, walled, medieval city on Malta's highest and most defensible point. It is a very popular spot with tourists and it houses some amazing historical buildings. The entrance is across a deep moat (now a volleyball court) and through a decorative archway. You can walk around its narrow streets or take one of the "karozzini", Maltese carriages. The high, buildings ensure that Mdina remains a cooler oasis on Malta's hottest days - although you will have to share its teeming streets with hordes of coach trippers and school parties.
Mdina is known for its ornate door-knockers (yes, really!!) and torches placed beside the doors - replicas of medieval street lights.
